Bush Plans Feb Visit to Bulgaria, Sofia Shrugs off Surprise Reports

US president George Bush will spend five days touring Europe in February, including a visit to Bratislava before going briefly to Bulgaria on February 25, a Slovak online news edition reported surprisingly.
On February 24 Bush will meet Vladimir Putin in Bratislava before possibly making a flying visit to Bulgaria the following day and heading back to the US from there, the Slovak spectator reported.
The information was denied both by the US Embassy in Sofia and the Bulgarian Presidency.
Approached by journalists, Foreign Minister Solomon Passy vacillated, saying it is too early to either confirm or deny the report.
A reliable diplomatic source has revealed that US president George Bush will spend five days touring Europe in February, including a visit to Bratislava for a US-Russia summit meeting with Vladimir Putin, the Slovak spectator said, citing the daily Pravda.
According to the daily's source Bush will arrive in Europe on Monday February 21 and return to the US on February 25. The US president will visit Great Britain before heading to NATO headquarters in Brussels. On February 23 he will spend half a day in Germany and land in Slovakia in the evening, the source reportedly said.
In a new indication of the tough issues that face President George Bush during his second term, a ABC News-Washington Post opinion poll found that for the first time, a decisive majority of Americans have concluded that the war is not worth its costs. Fifty-six percent of those surveyed said that given the costs, the conflict was "not worth fighting," an eight-point rise from the summer. Forty-two percent said it was worth fighting.
While a slight majority believed that the war had contributed to long-term U.S. security, 70 percent said the gains had carried an "unacceptable" cost in military casualties.
Americans also appeared to believe, however, that a withdrawal now from Iraq would not be wise. |
