Mexico President Calderon Praises Bulgaria's Tax Policy

Mexico's President Felipe Calderon congratulated his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov on Bulgaria's innovative fiscal reform and the introduction of uniform tax rates. The meeting of the two presidents was in Mexico City on Thursday. It was described by Parvanov as an unorthodox meeting because from the very beginning his Mexican counterpart expressed his immense interest in the Bulgarian economy. After the meeting Calderon emphasized that Mexico saw Bulgaria as a strategic partner in the EU, which is the second largest foreign investor and trading partner of the Central American country. Both presidents agreed that the bilateral trade, which varies between USD 20 M and USD 40 M per year, could be seen as symbolic, and that there was great potential to expand it. Parvanov pointed out that Bulgarian machinery exports to Mexico had been successful in the past, and that Bulgaria could offer the transfer of technologies in the pharmaceutical industries as well as joint ventures in the foods industry. The Bulgarian President also suggested the exchange of exhibitions - the showing of Thracian treasures in Mexico, and of the treasures of ancient Mexican civilizations in Bulgaria. As part of his program, Parvanov is going to visit Teotihuacan and the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza on the Yakatan Peninsula. The Mexican President Calderon's welcome speech to the Bulgarian President referred to Bulgaria's achievements in world history, and compared Bulgaria to the co-existence of different peoples and cultures in Mexico. Calderon also invited Bulgaria to participate in the 2010 celebrations for the 200th anniversary since Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain. On Thursday Parvanov met also with the Chair of Mexico's Senate, and with the Mayor of Mexico City, who awarded him an honorary citizen certificate and a medal. On Friday the Bulgarian President is going to take part in a business brunch organized by the Mexican Foreign Trade Council. Parvanov is the second Bulgarian head of state to visit Mexico after the communist dictator Todor Zhivkov did so in 1979.
