Bulgaria Parliament Opens Tender for Design of New Plenary Hall
|
The Bulgarian Parliament opened a tender to select an architectural design for its new building, which is supposed to be located in the inner yard of the building known as the former Communist Party headquarters in downtown Sofia.
According to the conditions of the competition, which were published on the web site of the State Gazette on Friday, the winner with the best architectural idea will receive an award of BGN 50 000. The second and third best projects will receive BGN 30 000 and BGN 20 000 respectively.
According to the administration of the Parliament, its new hall is going to fill up completely the inner yard of the building of the former Communist Party, which is located at the junction of the Dondukov Blvd and the Tsar Osvoboditel ("Tsar Liberation) Blvd.
Instead of a roof, the new building is going to have a glass dome similar to that of the German Bundestag in Berlin. A new main entrance for the new parliamentary building will also be created. It will be located at the back of the present building, and will open up into the Knyaz Aleksandar I Square, and the former Tsar's Palace.
The intention of the Parliament is to have all offices and the plenary hall together in one building because presently many of the offices of the its members are located in the former Communist Party building, which is several hundred meters away from the current Parliament's building.
The former Communist Party headquarters is famous for having been set on fire in 1990. On its top it used to have a five-pointed star, which was removed after 1989 and replaced with a Bulgarian flag. |
