Bulgaria to Send Medicine, Body Bags to Georgia
|
Georgia has officially asked Sofia to provide humanitarian aid that includes medicine, medical equipment and plastic body bags, Deputy Foreign Minister Milen Keremedchiev announced Tuesday.
The actual amount of the aid is to be discussed during a meeting of Bulgaria's PM Sergey Stanishev with Georgia's Ambassador to Bulgaria Mikheil Ukleba.
Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov met Tuesday with representatives of the special services and the foreign ministry to discuss the current situation in Georgia.
"The conflict in South Ossetia poses no direct threat for Bulgaria's national security," a statement issued by the president's press service after the meeting reads.
"Bulgaria supports the efforts of the French Presidency of the European Union to end the military conflict. Bulgaria's institutions state that the military actions must be stopped and a peaceful solution sought after," the statement reads further.
The Caucasus conflict has escalated as Russian forces have pushed deep into Georgia after Georgia launched last week a military offensive against the pro-Russian breakaway province of South Ossetia.
